Tearing Down the Curtain: A Joint Exhibition of Human Rights Activism and Voice of Taiwan in North America

The dictators built a wall of lies and blocked out the news, and political prisoners became a taboo subject. However, a group of individuals were willing to put their lives on the line to provide human rights support, allowing Taiwan’s “real voices” to be heard overseas. How can we remember these brave individuals who defied the odds? How were the voices of freedom heard in the cracks? The joint exhibition takes you on a journey to understand how activists overseas and people in Taiwan paved the way for Taiwan’s democracy.

This joint exhibition is presented in both English and Chinese.

Aid Beyond the Shadows: A Special Exhibition on the Blacklist and Transnational Human Rights Rescue Operations

This exhibition focuses on the human rights rescue missions in Taiwan, looking at the political rescue activities from the 1960s until the 1990s. Initially, political prisoners had no support. However, towards the end, international media outlets and human rights groups advocated for them. Individuals on the blacklist were no longer exiled and they, as well as the political prisoner advocacy groups, became important forces that won freedom of speech. Taiwan became an island with no political prisoners, and where rescue missions were no longer needed. No one had to be exiled because of their political beliefs.

In addition, the exhibition also highlighted the rescuers behind the missions. Rescuers in Taiwan devoted themselves entirely to supporting the missions even though they may face imprisonment. Rescuers overseas, those who care about Taiwan, and those who held their beliefs dear did all that they could to disseminate information and promote their ideals. They even helped the political prisoners escape Taiwan, supported them during their time of exile, and stood beside them to fight against political oppression.
Voice of Taiwan: The Sound of Freedom Between the Cracks

The North American Voice of Taiwan (VoT) was started by Morgan and Eileen Chang in New York as a form of “personal media.” In a world before the internet, they employed answering machines as a medium. Through their recordings, people from all over could listen with their own ears to the ongoing developments in Taiwan. While Taiwan was still under an authoritarian regime, VoT broke through the mainstream media’s monopoly and the defensive line of a news blackout to bring Taiwanese current events to the international media circuit. They not only reported on the Presbyterian Church’s “Declaration of Human Rights” emphasizing the need for Taiwan to become a new and independent country, they also reported on the Qiaotou Incident, Formosa Incident, Chen Wen-chen Incident, and more. Overseas Taiwanese people were able to obtain a timely understanding of what was happening on the island, inspiring a mass wave of sympathy and support that transformed into action for democracy and freedom. People could freely listen to VoT and freely duplicate it, and people across America and even the world established VoT stations modeled after the original. Taiwanese people scattered in different cities strove to let the world hear the sounds of freedom through the cracks of authoritarianism.
This exhibition not only collects historical sounds and images, but also allows us to understand the importance and value of “Letting the World Hear Taiwan” through interviews with broadcasters and theatrical interpretation.

A Stage Reading of the Documentary Play Listening to Voice of Taiwan in 1977

Before the plane has even taken off, I can already feel it… freedom from terror.

With the ring of a bicycle bell, we enter into the silence of Taiwanese society under an authoritarian regime. Once they step onto the plane, this group of people transform into immigrants in the eyes of Americans, and, to Taiwanese people who remained, they’re bidding Taiwan farewell. However, these wanderers dispersed across America nevertheless brandish slogans and organize demonstrations, marches, and protests, loudly shouting out words forbidden on the island. They joined together, assembling an unbreakable group, powerful enough to frighten the authoritarian government.

Listening to Voice of Taiwan in 1977, a work of documentary theater, tells a story based on the audio records, documents, and historical memories of Voice of Taiwan. The entire play is compiled from real events that happened to real people. It takes the audience back 40 years to listen to an answering machine recording, whose sounds gradually awakened a sense of Taiwan consciousness. It illustrates how “speaking for Taiwan” became a goal shared by many people in the 1970s who exhausted all efforts to fight for freedom for their compatriots from a free country.
